Employed abroad, living here
The UAE remote work visa: living here while employed elsewhere
The short answer
The remote work visa — also called the virtual working programme — allows people employed by, or running, a business outside the UAE to reside in the UAE while continuing that overseas work. It is self-sponsored, evidence-led (employment contract, income, insurance, and banking evidence are typically required), and it does not authorise you to work for UAE-based clients or employers. It is a residency route, not a tax status, and it does not replace a licence if you intend to trade locally.
The remote work visa exists for a specific situation: your income comes from outside the UAE and stays outside the UAE, but you want to live here legally.
It is often confused with a freelance permit. The distinction is the source of the work: the remote work visa assumes an overseas employer or overseas-registered business, while a freelance permit authorises you to invoice inside the UAE.
Where people get this wrong is assuming the visa settles their tax position. It does not. Residency and tax residency are separate assessments, and your home country may still have a claim.

Scope of this page
This is for you if
- You are employed by a company registered outside the UAE and can evidence that contract.
- You want UAE residency without setting up a company here.
- Your work and clients stay outside the UAE.
- You can meet the income, insurance, and documentation evidence the programme requires.
This may not be the right route if
- You intend to take on UAE clients or UAE employment — that needs a permit or sponsorship.
- You cannot evidence a stable overseas contract or income.
- You expect the visa to end your home-country tax obligations automatically.
- You need a route that supports hiring staff in the UAE.
Decision factors
What actually decides your route
An adviser works through these factors with you before any structure is recommended. Each one can change the licence, the emirate or free zone, the visa allocation, and the banking conversation.

Questions
Frequently asked
- Can I work for UAE clients on a remote work visa?
- No. The programme is built around income earned from outside the UAE. Serving UAE clients generally requires a freelance permit or a company licence.
- Does it make me a UAE tax resident?
- Residency and tax residency are separate. Tax residency has its own criteria, and your home country may continue to tax you. We coordinate with your tax adviser rather than opining ourselves.
- Can I sponsor my family?
- Family sponsorship may be possible subject to the standard income, housing, and documentation conditions. We confirm the current position against your evidence.
- What evidence is usually required?
- Typically an employment contract or company ownership evidence, proof of income, valid health insurance with UAE coverage, and recent bank statements. The exact list is set by the authority.
- How long is it valid?
- Validity and renewal terms are set by the authority and can change. We confirm the current terms before you apply.
