Source of Wealth and Source of Funds, Explained to the Bank.

The short answer

Source of wealth is how your overall wealth was built over time; source of funds is the documented origin of the specific money moving through this business or transaction. Banks, payment providers, regulators and free-zone authorities ask for both, at onboarding and again at review, and a narrative written after the question arrives is already behind. Velarozone builds the wealth history, the funds-specific story and the document pack with you before you apply.

Two different questions get asked in the same breath, and treating them as one is the most common reason a file stalls. Source of wealth asks how your overall net worth came to exist โ€” the employment, the business you sold, the inheritance, the investment returns, the years behind the number. Source of funds asks something narrower: where did this specific money, moving into this company, this account or this transaction, actually come from, and can you show the steps between that origin and here. A clean answer to one does not answer the other, and a compliance officer who asks a second question after the first was answered is not being difficult โ€” they asked two different things.

The questions arrive earlier than most founders expect. They sit inside bank account readiness review, inside a payment provider's onboarding, inside a free-zone or mainland authority's periodic review of an existing licence, and wherever enhanced due diligence applies to a client or a transaction. They also recur: a narrative built once for one institution does not automatically answer a different institution's version of the same question, asked in a different form, a year later.

This is for you if

  • You are preparing a UAE corporate bank-account application and the capital or the founders' wealth needs a documented history.
  • A bank, a payment provider or an authority has already asked and the first answer did not land.
  • Your wealth includes a business sale, an inheritance, an investment exit or a digital-asset disposal that needs its own evidence trail.
  • You are bringing foreign-sourced capital into a UAE structure and want the file built before the question is asked.

This may not be the right route if

  • You want wealth or funds described in a way that is not evidenced โ€” no credible file does that, and a bank spots it.
  • You are not opening an account, applying for a licence or entering a transaction that will test this at all.
  • You want a guaranteed outcome from the bank or authority โ€” approval and timing stay with them.

What this service includes

  • A structured wealth history covering how the overall position was built.
  • A funds-specific narrative for the capital or flows relevant to this application.
  • A document checklist and gap review against what the reviewing institution typically asks for.
  • Cross-checking the narrative against your licence, business plan and expected flows.
  • Coordination of the pack before submission, including questions that arrive afterwards.

What it does not include

  • Opening the account or approving the application โ€” that decision stays with the bank, the provider or the authority.
  • Any explanation of wealth or funds that is not evidenced; we will tell you where the evidence is missing rather than paper over it.
  • A legal or tax opinion on the underlying transaction, which comes from a licensed professional under a separate engagement.

Process

How the work is sequenced

Each stage has its own dependencies โ€” activity approvals, document legalisation, authority processing, and bank review โ€” and we report progress against them rather than against one overall date.

  1. 01

    Map

We review the wealth and funds history you already have and identify what is evidenced and what is missing.

  2. 02

    Build

The wealth and funds narratives are written and the supporting documents assembled into a reviewable pack.

  3. 03

    Submit and support

The pack goes forward with the application, and we answer follow-up questions as they arrive.

In detail

Two terms, two different answers

Source of wealth covers the whole arc: a salary built up over a career, the proceeds of selling a business, an inheritance, dividends from a shareholding, the gain on a property or a digital-asset disposal, an investor's own track record. It is asked once, broadly, and revisited whenever the picture changes materially โ€” a large exit, a new inheritance, a change in occupation.

Source of funds is asked every time money actually moves: the capital injected into a new UAE company, the payment behind a specific transfer, the funding behind an escrow instruction. It does not matter how wealthy you are overall if the specific sum in front of the reviewer cannot be traced to something clean. The two travel together โ€” a credible funds story usually sits inside a credible wealth story โ€” but neither substitutes for the other.

Who actually asks, and when

Banks ask at account opening, and again whenever a transaction looks different from what was expected at onboarding. Licensed payment providers ask during their own onboarding, under the same due-diligence standards a bank works to. A free-zone or mainland authority can ask during a licence application or a later review, particularly where ownership, activity or expected flows have changed. Wherever an AML programme applies enhanced due diligence to a client or a transaction, the same two questions sit behind it.

  • A bank, at account opening and at periodic review.
  • A licensed payment provider, during onboarding and when volumes shift.
  • A free-zone or mainland authority, during licensing or a later review.
  • Any counterparty running an AML programme that flags a client or a transaction for enhanced due diligence.

What a credible narrative actually contains

A narrative that holds up has four parts. The origin of wealth over time, named against real events rather than summarised in a sentence โ€” salary and employment records, dividend statements, a signed sale-and-purchase agreement, probate documents, investment statements. The funds specific to this business โ€” where that particular capital sat before it moved, in whose name, and why it moved now. The documents that evidence each step, matched one for one against the claims the narrative makes, including transliterated names where a document was issued abroad. And consistency with the business itself: the story has to agree with the licence, the business plan and the flows the bank or authority was told to expect.

None of the four stands alone. A wealth history with no funds narrative answers the wrong question for a transaction; a funds narrative with no wealth history invites a reviewer to ask what sits behind it.

Why files are refused or delayed

Most refusals are not about the money being dishonest. They are about the file not closing the gap a reviewer is trained to look for.

  • A gap between the stated origin and the account the money actually sits in, with no document bridging it.
  • An explanation offered with no document behind it โ€” a sentence where a reviewer expects a record.
  • Amounts that do not match the wealth history: a transfer larger than the stated income or asset base would produce.
  • Documents issued in a third party's name, with no explanation of the relationship to the applicant.
  • Digital-asset wealth with no record of the disposal, the exchange or the counterparty on the other side.
  • A narrative built only after the reviewer asked โ€” which reads as reactive, whatever it actually says.

Why we build this before you apply, not after

We work through the wealth and funds history with you before any application exists, because the order changes the outcome: a reviewer reading a prepared, consistent file forms a different view than one reading answers produced under a deadline. The process is the same whichever institution is on the other end โ€” review what documents already exist, identify what is missing, write the narrative in the form the reviewer actually reads, and check it against the licence, the business plan and, where a transaction is involved, the escrow arrangement handling it.

Where the gap cannot be closed โ€” a disposal with no surviving record, an inheritance with no probate documentation โ€” we say so rather than submit a file we know will fail, because a declined application is harder to recover from than an honest delay.

What is being tested

What a bank or regulator checks, and what we prepare for it

Every reviewer is working through the same handful of questions, whatever form their checklist takes. The table sets out what each one is really testing and what we build to answer it.

What a source-of-wealth and source-of-funds review tests, item by item.

  • Origin of wealth

    What it is really testing
Whether the overall pattern of wealth is explained and evidenced across time, not asserted in a sentence
    What we prepare with you
A written wealth history matched to documents โ€” employment, a business sale, inheritance, investment returns
  • Source of this transaction's funds

    What it is really testing
Whether the specific money can be traced to a clean, attributable event
    What we prepare with you
A funds-specific narrative for the capital injection, the invoice or the transfer in question
  • Path between origin and destination

    What it is really testing
Whether the route the money took has unexplained gaps or unexplained third parties
    What we prepare with you
A reconciliation across accounts, transfers and dates that closes those gaps before they are raised
  • Consistency with the business

    What it is really testing
Whether the funds story matches the licence, the projected flows and the counterparties
    What we prepare with you
Cross-checking the narrative against the [business plan and supporting documentation](/services/business-plans-and-documentation)
  • Legitimacy of underlying assets

    What it is really testing
For wealth from a sale, a disposal or a digital asset, whether that underlying event is itself documented
    What we prepare with you
Sourcing and organising the sale agreement, valuation or exchange record behind it
  • Timing of the narrative

    What it is really testing
Whether the pack was ready before the application or assembled after a question arrived
    What we prepare with you
Preparing the file ahead of submission, not in reply to a request

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the actual difference between source of wealth and source of funds?
Source of wealth is how your overall net worth was built, over your working life. Source of funds is the documented origin of the specific money moving through a particular account or transaction. A reviewer can ask either, or both, and answering one does not answer the other.
Who asks for this, and when?
Banks at account opening and at periodic review, licensed payment providers during onboarding, free-zone and mainland authorities during licensing or a later review, and any counterparty applying enhanced due diligence under an AML programme.
What if I don't have documents for something from years ago?
We work with what exists โ€” bank records, employer letters, probate documents, prior tax filings โ€” and tell you honestly where a gap cannot be closed, rather than submit a narrative we know will not hold.
Does this cover wealth from crypto or other digital assets?
Yes. A digital-asset disposal needs the same evidence as any other: the record of the original holding, the disposal or exchange, and the counterparty or platform on the other side of it.
Can Velarozone guarantee the bank or authority will accept the narrative?
No. We build the clearest, best-evidenced file we can from what exists, and tell you where it is weak. Acceptance is the reviewing institution's decision, made on its own criteria.
When should this be prepared?
Before the application, not after a question arrives. A file built in advance reads as prepared; one assembled in response to a request reads as reactive, whatever it says.
