Structuring your own visa
Investor visa vs employment visa under your own company
The short answer
If you own a UAE company, you can usually take a residency visa either as a partner/investor in that company or as an employee of it, and the choice has real consequences for salary reporting, WPS registration, and how banks view you. Being employed by a third-party company is a separate route with its own sponsorship chain. None of these choices should be made on visa cost alone — they affect payroll obligations, substance expectations, and account-opening conversations.
Founders who own their UAE company are often surprised that there is a genuine choice between taking their own residency as an investor/partner or as an employee of their own business, and that the choice is not cosmetic.
An employee visa under your own company usually means a declared salary, WPS registration, and payroll obligations that a partner/investor visa does not automatically carry. A partner/investor visa avoids that, but changes how some banks and authorities read your involvement in day-to-day operations.
Employment by an unrelated third-party company is a different question again — sponsorship, substance, and banking relationships sit with that employer, not with you, and it does not by itself say anything about your own company if you also hold one.

Scope of this page
This is for you if
- You own, or are about to own, a UAE company and need to decide how to take your own visa.
- You want to understand the WPS and payroll consequence of an employment visa before choosing it.
- You are weighing a partner/investor visa against a salaried role in your own company for banking or substance reasons.
- You hold outside employment and need to understand how that interacts with owning a UAE company.
This may not be the right route if
- You are looking for the cheapest visa route without regard to its payroll or reporting consequences.
- You want to avoid declaring any salary while still presenting substance to a bank.
- You expect us to set your salary level — that is a business and tax decision for you and your adviser.
- You need immigration law advice beyond the practical comparison covered here.
Decision factors
What actually decides your route
An adviser works through these factors with you before any structure is recommended. Each one can change the licence, the emirate or free zone, the visa allocation, and the banking conversation.
Comparing the three common routes.
Partner/investor visa — own company
- Salary / WPS
- No salary requirement in the same way as an employee visa
- Substance signal
- Shows ownership; some banks probe operational involvement separately
- Typical use
- Founders who want residency without running payroll on themselves
Employment visa — own company
- Salary / WPS
- Declared salary, WPS registration required
- Substance signal
- Signals active operational role and a functioning payroll
- Typical use
- Founders who want to show a formal role and payroll history
Employment visa — third-party employer
- Salary / WPS
- Employer's payroll and WPS obligations
- Substance signal
- Substance sits with the employer, not with your own company
- Typical use
- Individuals employed elsewhere who may separately hold a company
Combining routes
- Salary / WPS
- Depends on structure; generally one main employment/residency basis at a time
- Substance signal
- Requires care to avoid conflicting sponsorship
- Typical use
- Needs case-by-case review before assuming it's possible
| Route | Salary / WPS | Substance signal | Typical use |

Possible directions
Structure categories an adviser will assess
The right choice depends on how you want banks and authorities to read your role, and on whether you are ready to run formal payroll on yourself.
Partner/investor visa, no personal payroll
You take residency as a shareholder/partner and do not run a personal salary through the company.
Employee visa with declared salary
You are formally employed by your own company, registered on WPS, with a declared and paid salary.
Employment by a third party
You are sponsored by an unrelated employer, separate from any company you own.
Mixed arrangement
Ownership in your own company alongside employment elsewhere, structured and reviewed carefully to avoid sponsorship conflicts.

Questions
Frequently asked
- Do I have to pay myself a salary if I take an investor visa in my own company?
- Not in the same mandatory way as an employee visa, but you should discuss the tax and banking consequences of taking no salary with your adviser, since banks and tax authorities may still expect a clear picture of how you draw funds.
- Is WPS registration required for a partner/investor visa?
- WPS obligations generally attach to declared employees on payroll. A partner/investor visa does not create the same payroll relationship, but this depends on how your company is structured — we confirm before you commit.
- Can I hold an employment visa with a third-party employer and still own a UAE company?
- Often yes, but it needs to be checked against both your employment contract and any restrictions tied to your company's structure and your own sponsorship status.
- Which route do banks prefer?
- Banks do not have a single preference; they look at the whole picture — salary, activity, and expected flows — so the right route is the one that matches how the business actually operates, not the one that looks best on paper.
- Can I switch from an investor visa to an employee visa later?
- Generally yes, subject to cancelling and reapplying under the new basis, but this has cost and timing implications that should be planned for rather than done reactively.
