Long-term residency

The UAE golden visa: categories, and what it actually changes

The short answer

The golden visa is a long-term UAE residence permit issued to people who fit one of several defined categories — real-estate investors, business investors and entrepreneurs, specialised professionals and scientists, outstanding students, and a handful of other creative and humanitarian categories. It extends the length of residency and removes some of the renewal frequency of standard visas, but it does not itself create a company, grant citizenship, or change your tax residency. Eligibility is assessed against the criteria the issuing authority applies, and we do not promise approval for any category.

The golden visa is marketed heavily, and much of that marketing blurs what the visa actually does. It is a residency status with a longer validity than the standard employment or investor visa, obtained by meeting the criteria of a specific category rather than by paying a fee for a generic upgrade.

Because the categories differ so much — a property investor's route bears no resemblance to a specialised-talent nomination — the right starting point is an honest read of which category you might actually qualify for, not a generic pitch for 'the golden visa'.

This page sets out the categories at a high level and the approach we take to assessing eligibility. It does not promise a particular outcome, timeline, or investment threshold, because those are set and changed by the issuing authorities.

Scope of this page

Velarozone provides setup and operational-readiness coordination. This page is general information, not legal, tax, immigration, or banking advice.

This is for you if

  • You want an honest read of which golden visa category, if any, you plausibly fit.
  • You are comparing the golden visa against a standard investor or employment visa before committing capital.
  • You already hold, or are close to holding, the qualifying asset, role, or academic result a category requires.
  • You understand this is a residency status, not a tax-residency or citizenship shortcut.

This may not be the right route if

  • You are looking for a guaranteed approval or a fixed investment number quoted in advance.
  • You expect the golden visa to change your company's tax position or your home-country obligations.
  • You do not yet meet any category's underlying requirement and are hoping eligibility can be arranged informally.
  • You need residency urgently and cannot wait for a full assessment and authority decision.

Decision factors

What actually decides your route

An adviser works through these factors with you before any structure is recommended. Each one can change the licence, the emirate or free zone, the visa allocation, and the banking conversation.

Possible directions

Structure categories an adviser will assess

Most applicants fit clearly into one route once the underlying asset, company, or credential is examined — the difficulty is usually in people assuming they qualify for a route that does not match their actual facts.

Property-based route

Where the qualifying asset is real estate you already own or are acquiring, held in your own name or a permitted structure.

Company ownership route

Where the qualifying basis is ownership of, or investment in, a UAE-registered company.

Nomination or credential route

For specialised talent categories that depend on sector endorsement rather than capital.

Student route

For qualifying graduates, tied to academic institution and results rather than investment.

  • Tax residency or tax-planning advice arising from the visa.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does the golden visa require a UAE sponsor?
No — one of the defining features of the golden visa categories is that they do not depend on employer or company sponsorship in the way a standard employment visa does. The specific conditions still depend on the category.
How long does the golden visa last?
It is a long-term residency compared with standard visas, with the exact validity period and renewal conditions set by the issuing authority and confirmed at application.
Can the golden visa be cancelled?
Yes, residency status generally remains subject to the conditions the authority applies, including ongoing compliance with the category's basis (for example, continued ownership of the qualifying property or company).
Does holding a golden visa make me a UAE tax resident?
Not automatically. Tax residency is assessed separately under its own rules and your day count, ties, and circumstances. We coordinate with a tax adviser rather than giving a tax opinion here.
Can I sponsor my family on a golden visa?
Family sponsorship is generally available to golden visa holders, with its own document and eligibility requirements — see our family sponsorship page for the detail.

Start with a structure assessment, not a package

In an initial consultation you receive a plain-language decision summary, a document-preparation list, and the next actions for your situation. It is not an approval, a fixed price, or a tax opinion.

This page is general information about UAE business setup, not legal, tax, immigration, or banking advice. Rules, fees, permitted activities, and bank policies can change. Final eligibility depends on your facts and the applicable rules at the time of application.
