The short answer
A UAE freelance visa is residency obtained on the back of a freelance permit rather than employer sponsorship. You first obtain a permit from a free zone or authority that issues freelance permits for your activity, then apply for residency against that permit. The permit defines the activities you may legally invoice for, so the activity list matters more than the visa itself. Costs, permitted activities, and eligibility differ by issuing authority and change over time.
Freelancing in the UAE is a licensing question before it is a visa question. The permit is what makes your invoicing lawful; the residency visa is what follows from holding it.
Several free zones and authorities issue freelance permits, each with its own activity list, document requirements, and renewal cycle. A permit that covers media work may not cover consultancy, and vice versa.

- Is a freelance permit the same as a freelance visa?
- No. The permit authorises the work; the visa is the residency that can be applied for once the permit exists. You can hold a permit without residency if you are already sponsored elsewhere.
- Can I freelance for UAE and overseas clients?
- The permit governs the activities you may perform under UAE law. Where your clients sit is a separate commercial and tax question we flag but do not opine on.
- Can I sponsor my family on a freelance visa?
- Family sponsorship is possible in principle but subject to the standard income, housing, and documentation conditions applied to the sponsor.
- Can I convert a freelance permit into a company later?
- Yes, that is a common path. We plan the permit so the later conversion to a free zone or mainland licence is not disruptive.
- How much does it cost?
