Fundamentals
What a UAE trade licence actually is
The short answer
A UAE trade licence is the certificate issued by a mainland economic department or a free-zone authority that authorises a specific legal entity to carry out named activities from a specific location. It lists the licence number, the legal form, the shareholders, the permitted activities, and an expiry date. It is not the same document as the establishment card, which is issued separately by immigration once the licence exists.
Every business operating in the UAE — mainland or free zone — needs a trade licence issued by the relevant authority before it can legally trade, invoice, hire, or sponsor visas. The document looks simple, but almost every field on it has consequences elsewhere: for banking, for immigration, and for tax registration.
This page explains what the licence contains, what the numbers mean, and how to check that a licence you have been shown — a supplier's, a landlord's, a partner's — is genuine and current.
It does not replace reading your own licence with an adviser. The activities listed are what you are legally permitted to do; anything outside that list is a compliance problem waiting to surface at renewal, at audit, or at a bank.

Scope of this page
This is for you if
- You want to understand your own licence before you sign anything else.
- You are dealing with a counterparty and want to verify their trade licence is real and current.
- You are about to apply and want to know what will end up printed on the certificate.
- You are confused about the difference between the licence, the establishment card, and the trade name.
This may not be the right route if
- You already have a licence and only need it renewed — that is a processing task, not a reading exercise.
- You need a formal legal opinion on licence terms — that sits with a lawyer, not this page.
- You are trying to add an activity retroactively without going through the amendment process.
- You want a shortcut around verifying a counterparty's licence with the issuing authority directly.
Decision factors
What actually decides your route
An adviser works through these factors with you before any structure is recommended. Each one can change the licence, the emirate or free zone, the visa allocation, and the banking conversation.

Structure categories an adviser will assess
These are topics for assessment, not recommendations. The right answer depends on your activity, customers, ownership, team, workspace needs, and regulator or bank requirements.
Mainland licence (DED / DET)
Issued by the relevant emirate's economic department; permits trading anywhere in the UAE mainland subject to activity rules.
Free-zone licence
Issued by a specific free-zone authority; activities and trading scope are confined to that zone's rules unless a separate arrangement is made.
Professional licence
For consultancy and service activities carried out by an individual or firm, typically without a local service agent requirement in most emirates now.
Commercial licence
For trading, import/export, and general commerce activities.
Industrial licence
For manufacturing or processing activity, usually tied to specific premises requirements.
What this service includes
- A walk-through of your own licence, field by field, once issued.
- Verification support if you need to confirm a counterparty's licence.
- Flagging any mismatch between listed activities and actual operations.
- Coordination with the issuing authority on any query about the document.
- Explanation of how the licence links to the establishment card and tax registrations.
What it does not include
- Legal opinions on licence terms or liability.
- Retroactive activity approval — this is a formal amendment, handled separately.
- Guarantees about a counterparty's standing beyond what the licence and authority record show.

Every route is planned against how the business will actually operate in the UAE.
Process
Stages, not promised calendar days
Timelines depend on activity approvals, document legalisation, authority processing, and bank review. We report progress by stage.
- 01
Issuance
The authority issues the licence once the application, activities, and premises are approved.
- 02
Reading the certificate
We confirm every field matches the intended structure before you use the licence anywhere else.
- 03
Downstream use
The licence number and details feed into the establishment card, bank account opening, and tax registration.
- 04
Verification when needed
Any party can check a licence's status with the issuing authority's public search tool.
- 05
Renewal
The licence is renewed annually or as set by the authority; an expired licence is not valid for trading.
Questions
Frequently asked
- What is the difference between a trade licence and a registration number?
- The licence number identifies the licence certificate itself. Some authorities also issue a separate commercial registration or company registration number used in other filings. Both should appear on official correspondence from the authority.
- Can I trade in an activity not listed on my licence?
- No. Operating outside the listed activities is a compliance breach that can affect renewal, banking, and tax registration. The correct route is to apply to add the activity.
- How do I verify someone else's UAE trade licence?
- Each issuing authority — mainland department or free-zone authority — provides a licence-verification search using the licence number or company name. We can run this check as part of due diligence.
- Does the trade licence include my residency visa?
- No. The licence authorises the business. Residency visas and the establishment card are separate immigration processes that follow once the licence exists.
- What happens if my licence expires?
- An expired licence generally means the entity is not authorised to trade, and banks and government portals may restrict services until it is renewed. Renewal terms and any late fees are set by the issuing authority.
