Question

Can I apply for a golden visa myself, or do I have to be nominated?

VelarozoneAdvisory desk

The short answer

Both routes exist and the authority publishes them side by side. ICP's own residence guides print two submission routes — self-application, and nomination by the relevant authorities — and ICP separately publishes a Golden Residency Nomination Application as a distinct service, described as a pre-approval service targeting distinguished categories, with its application and issuance fees published at AED 0 and a smart-services fee of AED 100. So nomination is a real, separately-published step rather than a favour somebody does for you, and it is not the residence: pre-approval establishes that the category fits, and the residence is then issued through the relevant issuance service afterwards.

What each route is for

Self-application suits categories where the qualification is documentary and the applicant holds the documents: an investment that can be evidenced by a letter from the relevant registry or fund, a project valuation from an auditor, an accredited academic record.

Nomination suits categories judged on standing rather than on a threshold an applicant can assemble alone — where the point is that a competent body says you are what you say you are. That is why the nomination route exists at all, and why it is published as pre-approval rather than as issuance.

Pre-approval is not residence

  • The nomination service is published with zero application and issuance fees, and a AED 100 smart-services line — the authority is not charging for the assessment itself.
  • A successful pre-approval is followed by the issuance service for the relevant category, which has its own published fees and its own terms.
  • ICP also publishes a six-month multiple-entry visa specifically to complete Golden Residency procedures, which is what makes the gap between approval and issuance survivable for someone entering to finish the process. Its issuance fee is published well above the small lines quoted here, and we do not print it as though it were incidental.

What neither route changes

Eligibility is decided by ICP against its published category requirements, on the evidence submitted. Neither route creates an eligibility that is not there, and neither converts a refusal into an approval.

Anyone offering a guaranteed golden residence, or a timeline the authority does not itself publish, is offering something they are not in a position to deliver. The honest version is that a well-built application under the right category has a good chance, and that the decision remains the authority's.

Where this stops

Which route applies to you follows from which category you fit, and that is the assessment — not the paperwork. The categories overlap, the evidence one accepts is not what another asks for, and choosing the route before choosing the category is how applications get refused on grounds that had nothing to do with the applicant's actual standing. Send us what you can evidence and we will tell you which published category it points at and which of the two routes that category runs through.
