What is a smart service fee on a UAE government transaction?
The short answer
It is the authority's own charge for using its digital channel, published as a separate line on top of the fee for the thing you actually asked for. On ICP's services it appears at AED 100 on almost everything — issuing a visa, issuing a residence permit, renewing one, cancelling one, issuing or renewing an establishment card, amending visa or residence data — and at AED 50 on a plain data update. It is a government line rather than a provider's charge, which is why it appears whether you transact yourself or through someone else. It is also the clearest illustration of a general point: the headline fee for a UAE government transaction is never the whole authority charge.
